Boom in mobile web use reported

Boom in mobile web use reported A new report has concluded that the number of mobile phone owners using their devices to browse the internet is increasing at "an impressive rate".

Analysts Nielsen Mobile revealed that, as always seems to be the case in these types of survey, the US is leading the way. Nearly 40 million Americans, that's 16 per cent of all US mobile users, use their cellphones to surf on the go.

The UK can be proud though that it finished a close second in the 16-nation poll.

Indonesia finished bottom of the mobile internet league, with just 1.1 per cent of mobile subscribers using their handsets for web purposes.

Nielsen believes that the rise of the mobile web can be put down to the increasing availability of user-friendly handsets, higher speed networks, and unlimited data packages.

On a less happy note, the study discovered that roughly 95 million Americans were paying for mobile web access but did not necessarily make use of the service.

This does not seem to be a problem for the iPhone brigade. Nielsen found that 82 per cent of iPhone owners access the mobile internet, making them five times more likely to do so than the average mobile consumer.

This figure could be boosted yet further when the new iPhone 3G model hits the stores, challenging the Nokia N95's position as Europe's favourite phone for web surfing.

The browsing behaviour of PC and mobile users seems to vary enormously. PC internet users in the United States visit more than 100 domains per month on average, a figure that is only 6.4 for cellphone owners.

Companies such as Orange are heavily involved in promoting mobile internet use by backing sites such as MySocialPlace and Flirtomatic.

Other recent research from Nielsen found that 44 per cent of UK mobile phone users have registered with a social networking site, and estimated that Facebook had been accessed by nine per cent of all mobile web users, MySpace by 3.4 per cent, and Bebo by 2.6 per cent.
