Canadians upset by iPhone prices

Canadians upset by iPhone prices Excitement about the arrival of the iPhone on Canadian shores has been tempered by news of the tariffs that the country's Apple fans will be faced with paying.

Dismay at the charges is so great that a website, ruinediPhone.com, has been created with the aim of presenting a petition to Apple supremo, Steve Jobs, protesting about the pricing policy.

The petition draws Mr Jobs' attention to the fact that the Canadian iPhone comes with a mandatory three-year contract, whereas in the UK, O2 offers an 18-month contract and throws in the iPhone for free.
The petition goes on to say that Canadians will receive a third less calling time and half as many text messages than other countries participating in the iPhone global roll-out.

So it seems that, for once, UK consumers are getting a better deal on a must-have gadget than another country - some consolation for the fact that the US launch of the iPhone was before the British launch and the fact that the French have greater freedom to unlock the device and use it on different networks.

Mobile network carrier, Rogers seems to be the villain of the piece in the Canadian dispute. The message boards on mobile blog sites are jammed with complaints from irate Canadian mobile owners.

One of them is Stephane, who, writing on palluxo.com, refers to Rogers as 'Robbers' throughout his message and pointed out that "we (Canadians) already pay the highest cell/data rates in the world and these iPhone plans are simply NOT ACCEPTABLE".

Cactii, writing on the same website, agreed. She stated: "I can't believe there is no unlimited data option in any plan and that Canada is still paying so much per minute for cellular time."

A total of 10,000 people have so far signed the petition calling for a review of the pricing strategy - an impressive demonstration of consumer activism.

Apple's policy of giving exclusive contracts to individual mobile network carriers in different countries has attracted almost as much criticism as the praise that has been reserved for the must-have gadget's looks and performance.

Raped by Rogers... again

Rogers and other Canadian cell companies are like serial career criminals. They''ve become so addicted to raping their customers, it must seem to them as "normal" behavior. The Canadian Conservative government supports this kind of behavior by refusing to act on behalf of consumers, giving this country the worst, most expensive cellphone service in the developed world.
