Dudley residents campaign for end of phone mast

Dudley residents campaign for end of phone mast Residents in Dudley are calling for a mobile phone mast to be torn down following several people in their village contracting cancer, it has been reported.

So far 14 people have died and 20 more have developed cancer since the mast was erected in 1995, although residents argue the worst cases have been since the mast was fitted with extra antennae and dishes in 2001.

The protest movement is being led by retired NHS clinical director, Mrs Wendy Baggott, whose husband has contracted skin cancer twice. The couple live 200 metres from the mast.

"It's a monstrosity and feels like a threatening presence looming all over the neighbourhood," Mrs Baggott said.

"We have counted 18 antennae and eight dishes, the wellbeing of the whole community is being affected... It is a massive concern to us that there is a children's play area so near to it."

Communications watchdog, Ofcom has agreed that the site had a higher level of radiation than any other Ofcom tested site, although it added that the levels were "well within" legal levels.

The campaign comes soon after research is launched into the health effects of using a mobile phone long-term, and just one day after an Indian lobby group maintained that mobile phone use is perfectly safe.

Fresh research into mast dangers could be high in demand in the near future.
