Google develops mobile search service

Google is developing a new search service for mobile phones, it has been reported.

The search engine giant will provide the service so users can pay for and download digital content to their handsets, according to The Wall Street Journal.

The company has already made significant investments in the mobile phone market, announcing a deal with LG earlier this year to pre-install Google Maps and Gmail on some of its handsets.

Google's next move, according to the newspaper, will be to launch a mobile payment service allowing customers to pay for content such as videos and ringtones.

Sales of internet content have jumped in recent years and some analysts expect last year's global figure of $27.4 billion (£13.36 billion) to more than double by 2011.

Meanwhile, mobile phones outsold personal computers by more than four to one last year, according to Gartner, a research company.

In light of this many observers think it likely that in the future more people will access the web through their handsets than from computers.
