Insurers crack down on mobile phone driving offenders
New research conducted by the AA has found that more insurers are refusing cover to mobile phone driving offenders.
Mobile phone driving offenders are increasingly struggling to find insurance cover, according to new research conducted by the AA.
In a survey of eight insurers the survey found an instance of one insurer refusing to quote potential customers if they had even just one mobile telephone offence.
All other companies increased the premium from 4.2 per cent to 18.1 per cent.
Half of the insurers polled refused to provide cover for careless driving offenders whilst others imposed premium increases of up to 50.5 per cent.
Simon Douglas, director of AA Insurance, commented: "Many offenders are not aware of the premium rise and we hope that raising awareness of this extra cost will help people to think twice about chatting on a hand-held phone when driving.
"Don't even think about not telling your insurer about a mobile phone driving offence. If you're not truthful you could compromise your insurance cover."
Police routinely check drivers' mobile phone records when investigating major accidents.
