Jaguar XF has best 'sound for pound' in-car audio system
Shoppers at Ikea will be offered a cheap mobile phone package thanks to a 'piggy-back' deal between the furniture chain and mobile operator T-Mobile.
Ikea loyalty card-holders, of whom there are around 1.4 million, will be able to take advantage of the Family Mobile pay-as-you-go deal and be charged just 9p a minute for UK calls and 6p for text messages.
This is thought to be at least 25 per cent cheaper than comparable pay-as-you-go offers.
There is now an established trend for shopping chains with large customer numbers launching their own mobile phone services with the encouragement of network owners who are keen to use capacity otherwise wasted.
These services are referred to as mobile virtual network operators (MVNO) by the industry and 'piggy-back' deals by those who don't like acronyms.
Such arrangements already exist between Asda, Tesco and Carphone Warehouse.
The 9,500 Ikea staff in Britain will also benefit from the piggy-back - they will be presented with a handset and £5 worth of free calls.
Ikea's owners clearly think its deal mirrors the simple ethos of its company - it does not have fixed monthly payments and requires only an initial £10 outlay to buy airtime.
Customers will be able to keep their existing number and the service is sure to be easily understood as there is just one price for all UK calls.
The Scandinavian retailer said the service is aimed for an environment where "every penny counts".
Vodafone has taken the piggy-back model one step further by launching virtual networks that cater for Britain's immigrant population - a previously untapped market that could yield up to £500 million a year.
It is promoting Lebara Mobile, which manufactures sim cards that let customers make cheap international calls to Africa, south-east Asia, India, South America and eastern Europe.
Keen not to be left behind, Orange is reported to be nearing an agreement with Lycamobile to grab a corner of this market.
