Mobile signatures endorsed by new research
A study carried out by Forrester Research has endorsed mobile signatures.
Mobile signatures claim to turn any mobile phone into an identity card and signature pen for online and mobile services, such as banking and making purchases.
It works by allowing a user-chosen numerical password, or signing PIN to tell the SIM card to generate a digital signature.
The signature is then relayed via encrypted SMS and the password remains inside the secure SIM and is not exposed over any network - reducing the risk of identity theft.
Website, vnunet.com reported that Forrester Research analyst Bill Nagel claimed that mobile authentication has proved popular in many countries, with mobile signatures at the forefront of the new technology.
Mr Nagel said, "Nearly all of the banks and operators we spoke to said that the technology operates flawlessly and that the experiences of customers who use the system are very good."
The expert stressed his belief that beyond secure online banking and e-commerce, mobile signatures enable a wide range of other value-added consumer and corporate services.
Mobiles are increasingly being used as a form of identification when travelling as they can receive barcodes which act as substitute plane tickets.
