New Orange chief pinches three Virgin men
The new boss of Orange UK has successfully head-hunted three senior managers who he used to work with at Virgin Mobile.Tom Alexander, chief executive of Orange UK since the start of the year, founded Virgin Mobile in 1999, helping to revolutionise the industry by using the network of another company, T-Mobile, to become the UK's fifth biggest mobile operator. He is hoping that he and his former colleagues can perform a similar miracle for Orange UK, and help maintain its position as Britain's third biggest operator. The obstacles facing them will be similar to the ones facing Virgin regulators have consistently demanded cuts in prices, such as the charge to keep an old mobile number when customers switch to a new network. Pressure from Europe to end 'roaming charges' tariffs on mobile users making calls when they go abroad have also been hard for companies to resist. Orange will also have to brace itself for continued cut-throat competition from arch rivals O2 the exclusive network providers for Apple's much-lauded iPhone.
