O2 responds to rumours that iPhone is switching to Orange
Web blog rumours linking the iPhone with a switch to network provider Orange have elicited a quick response from O2.
O2 is the current exclusive network contract provider of the Apple gadget in the UK and has the licence to sell iPhones in its stores, most of which have to be locked into an O2 contract. That, according to a blog post on Omio by Ernest Doku, is a situation that could change. Doku claimed to have "word from a very, very credible source on the inside" that Apple is getting the seven-month itch after teaming up with O2 and is keeping a flirtatious eye out for possible alliances elsewhere. Website T3 has picked up on the story and thinks that the O2-Apple honeymoon period could well be over. It has heard talk that O2 isn't meeting the high sales targets that Apple wanted, allegedly giving Apple the right to invoke a clause to break the exclusivity deal, which was meant to continue until 2011. Perhaps the rumours are wishful thinking on the part of tech sites like T3, which would welcome increased competition in the iPhone market, hopefully bringing down contract prices and offering better network coverage than O2 can offer. O2 yesterday (28 July) tried to rubbish the rumours and stress that its relationship with Apple is still rock solid. The company pointed out that its agreement with Apple is "a multi-year exclusive", and highlighted that the original iPhone was launched less than a year ago. So should Apple go back on its vows and see if it can find a more convenient union elsewhere? Apple and O2 have both maintained good early sales of the iPhone 3G, which has much improved on the sales of the original iPhone. O2 has been the best iPhone partner for Apple outside of the UK since it was launched - evidence that they could work through any rocky patch they might be going through. Once they are in Carphone Warehouse or an O2 store I will purchase one. It's ridiculous at the moment!Comment posted by mimeArtist on 30/07/2008 16:27:23 Have your say! |
