O2 set to make announcement about iPhone
An announcement about the future of the iPhone will be made "in the coming weeks", O2 has confirmed.
Matthew Key, chief executive of O2, revealed the news during a conference call with journalists.
Mr Key would not be drawn on whether the statement would be about a 3G version of the iPhone, but tellingly did observe that O2 has already sold out of the basic 8GB version of the current model.
Speculation is growing that Apple and O2 are running down stocks of the so-called Jesus machine deliberately to build up demand for a 3G version.
Neither company seems worried about refuting rumours that a new version could be launched at the Worldwide Developers' Conference in San Francisco, which starts on June 9th.
O2 has just released trading figures which show that the company is proving resilient to the downturn in the global economy.
It gained more than 206,000 contract customers in the first quarter - its best ever start to a year.
With a new iPhone on the horizon, O2's good fortune seems set to continue.
