Race against iPhone heats up as Orange announces Bold release date
The race to catch up with the iPhone is well and truly underway after Orange announced its intention to release the BlackBerry Bold ahead of rivals T-Mobile.
While O2 is cornering the market with the iPhone, consumers wanting a BlackBerry Bold will have a choice of several networks to sign up to - and it looks like Orange has pipped T-Mobile for the release date.
Orange is ready to offer the handset from 16 August while those wanting the smartphone on T-Mobile will have to wait until September.
Fans of the phone will probably have to wait until November to get it on 3, while O2 and Vodafone are both expected to offer it on their own networks, Pocket-lint reports.
Beating T-Mobile to the release date of the new model could be crucial for Orange and the network operator has already made moves to prepare itself for the new technology. A 3G network is a crucial part of the BlackBerry Bold's communication abilities and Orange has been making moves to expand.
A bigger network infrastructure is aiming to bring "faster and even more reliable voice and data services" to its customers in Scotland, Northern Ireland and north-east England. The improvements to the service could be a big draw for customers who may have found it slightly inadequate before.
Orange claims the improvements will offer more reliable combined voice and data services as well as a call set-up success rate of 99 per cent. Meanwhile, the addition of fast 3G services will allow it to support the use of mobile broadband, making the BlackBerry Bold a worthwhile piece of kit for anyone on Orange.
Peter Marsden, vice president of IT & Networks at Orange, said that improving the network was central to ensuring Orange customers enjoyed a better service.
"We are investing heavily to improve our network and this investment is one step closer to our goal of becoming the best UK network for coverage and reliability by 2009," he explained.
The development will see plenty of 3G sites installed over the next year and customers will be hoping that the heavy investment outlined by Mr Marsden pays off and provides them with a better network.
