Rumours of a mini iPhone provoke a big reaction
The mobile news industry has devoted a large amount of time to a rumour that Apple is to bring out a mini version of the iPhone in time for Christmas.
The Daily Mail is the alleged origin of the rumour about the nano version, which it claims will be launched in the UK at up to £150 for pay-as-you-go customers by O2. An industry source, who remained strangely anonymous, told the Mail: "The iPhone 3G is too expensive to be a realistic proposition in the pay-as-you-go market. "However, a cut down version, with the candy bar shape of iPod nano music players, would be a huge hit as a Christmas gift." The thought that the Mail was the first to break the news of a bite-size iPhone has left a bitter taste with rival publications who have been quick to list reasons why this new product might never happen. ITProPortal.com compellingly puts the case for why an entry-level junior iPhone could just be no more than a geek's daydream. Reporter Desire Athow wrote: "First, why would Apple release a brand-new iPhone barely six months after the previous one? The cow has yet to be properly milked." Ms Athow is one of many writers who believes that shrinking the iPhone until it is half its size would be a big mistake as it would be difficult to watch movies on a two-inch LCD screen and typing on such a small area would be possible only for super-intelligent toddlers or small-handed adults. Others have also pointed out the contradiction that the iPhone is marketed as being no ordinary phone yet this new iPhone would presumably appeal because of its ordinary features. Certainly a mini iPhone would seem a little like having, well, a larger version of the Mini car. New products are normally released when a company's old ones are selling poorly, yet this is clearly not the case with the iPhone 3G which is easily outselling its predecessor. So, will the autumn see Apple confirming the rumours and the Mail running a smug 'We told you first' story?
