T-Mobile expected to launch Google Android phone
US bloggers can't stop talking about rumours that T-Mobile could launch a handset running Google's new Android smartphone operating system.
Up until recently it was widely expected that Google would manufacture its own phone in an attempt to expand its mighty empire yet further. However, the search engine giant - to the relief of manufacturers - seems content to just do battle in the mobile phone operating system market - a competitive market populated by heavyweight contenders such as Windows Mobile, Symbian, and Palm. Google is coy about a release date for Android but has been more forthcoming about the product itself - prototypes were given pride of place at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona earlier this year. It seems likely to boast a complete set of components, including a Linux-based operating system, middleware stack, customisable user interface and applications. News.com has stuck its neck on the line and pencilled in an October launch date for a T-Mobile Android phone - "probably" the HTC Dream. This would coincide with T-Mobile's 3G wireless network launch in October. Three other phones are also tipped to carry Android soon - the Sony Ericsson Z780, a high-end Samsung camera phone, and possibly the Motorola ZINE ZN5. When asked about reports of an Android launch, a spokesperson said that T-Mobile "doesn't comment on rumours". The company must definitely be looking for a sales kick - it is currently a distant fourth place in the US wireless market with rivals such as AT&T, Verizon Wireless and Sprint Nextel looking to forge further ahead. Back in the UK, mobile operator 3 has filed a complaint with the Advertising Standards Authority challenging T-Mobile's TV advert claim that "you won't find more minutes for £30, guaranteed". 3 seems to have set itself up as a moral guardian of the mobile industry. It has waged a four-year legal battle to encourage comparative advertising across Europe and recently took on O2 over another advertising campaign.
