T-Mobile to offer 3G BlackBerry Bold
Mobile phone enthusiasts could be seeing some competition for the iPhone 3G after T-Mobile announced that it will be the first network to bring the BlackBerry Bold to the UK.
The smartphone will be available in shops and online from September 2008 and it is the first T-Mobile BlackBerry handset to feature 3G internet.
Downloading attachments, streaming video or surfing the net will all be possible on the new handset and it could provide crucial competition for the new iPhone.
T-Mobile's 3G network is expanding across the UK and hopes to cover most of the population by 2009, giving the new handset a wide range and making it an instant competitor to Apple's stylish model.
The ability to download Excel or PowerPoint attachments is a further step up for the BlackBerry and another feature that will allow it to compete against the iPhone.
Business customers are the first to get their hands on the new model with T-Mobile offering it as part of its Business 1-Plan.
Oliver Chivers, head of business marketing at T-Mobile, said that increasing numbers of business customers were recognising the benefits of mobile working.
He said it would offer business customers the chance to "extend the boundaries of productivity and efficiency" as well as giving them access to a "superior" mobile broadband experience.
A GPS system and a camera add to the features on BlackBerry's latest gadget and according to Mr Chivers it offers T-Mobile business customers everything they need.
"We are sure it will prove a popular choice with both SME and enterprise customers," he predicted.
This is not the first move by T-Mobile to attempt to rival the offerings made by Apple after the network provider recently announced that it would give customers a new seven-day wide video rental service to compete directly against iTunes.
It will offer content that can be viewed on either a phone or a PC, and T-Mobile is reported to be in negotiations with names including EMI, ITV, Universal and Warner to screen content.
