Vodafone could become biggest provider in US
Vodafone is on the brink of becoming the biggest mobile phone company in the US, if new reports are to be believed.
The British company, which owns 45 per cent of the US mobile phone business Verizon, was in talks yesterday to buy out the country's fifth largest mobile company, Alltel.
Alltel was bought by two private equity firms for $25 billion (£12.7 billion) in November, but sources close to the companies said yesterday that "advanced discussions" were taking place between Verizon and Vodafone to take over Alltel.
If the deal goes ahead, it would put 80 million mobile phone subscribers in the US under Verizon-Alltel, making it larger than the current biggest mobile network AT&T, with its estimated 71 million.
The make-up of Verizon, which is 55 per cent owned by Verizon Communications and 45 per cent by Vodafone, would not change if the deal with Alltel went through, according to the rumours.
Vodafone has yet declined to comment, and Verizon and Alltel were not available.
