Vodafone scotches rumours of MTN bid
Rumours that Vodafone is preparing a £19 billion bid for MTN, Africa's largest mobile phone operator, have been denied by the British-based company.
It would be forgivable for Vodafone to believe that MTN is an attractive proposition as its portfolio includes operations in South Africa, Nigeria, Ghana and Uganda, as well as several countries in the Middle East.
However, a spokesman for Vodafone said yesterday: "We have no intention of pursuing a bid for MTN."
Purchasing MTN would have been the largest deal done by Vodafone's chief executive Arun Sarin since he took over the hot seat from Sir Christopher Gent six years ago.
Vodafone already has interests in Africa, where it has businesses in Egypt and Kenya and a presence in several sub-Saharan states through its shareholding in South Africa's Vodacom.
Africa has been targeted by mobile companies which see Western markets as becoming saturated. Countries such as Nigeria are among the fastest-growing mobile markets on the planet, with low-end, no-frills handsets proving particularly popular.
