Vodafone to open 50 new shops

Vodafone to open 50 new shops Vodafone is to open 50 new shops to work alongside the 350 that are already in business.

It could well be that each of the new shops is manned by ten people - the company plans to take on 500 new recruits as well.

Bristol, London and Liverpool will be the first areas to boast the new outlets - with the ribbons on the new premises likely to be cut in the autumn. The remaining shops should be operational by spring 2009.

Tom Devine, the director of consumer sales for Vodafone in the UK, said: "To deliver the best service, we need to make sure that our customers and potential customers can speak face to face with a retail adviser at a town near them."

There could well be another motive for the Vodafone expansion - spending their way out of trouble.

Analysts believe that Vodafone is now growing slower than both O2 and Orange in the UK, despite a successful big push with cheaper tariffs.

The new shops are expected to take trade away from rivals such as Carphone Warehouse, where Vodafone must pay a commission each time a sale is made.

In other Vodafone-related news, Mobile Today has reported that the firm has increased the amount it charges customers for calls to numbers starting with the 08 prefix - bad news for those who like to cast their vote near the end of Saturday night TV shows.

From the start of September, Vodafone customers will have to pay 20p per minute – an increase of 5p per minute to call numbers beginning with 05, 080, or 084.

Calls to 0871 numbers will go up from 25p a minute to 35p a minute.

A spokeswoman for Vodafone was quoted as saying: "We do not believe that the minimum call charge changes will have a significant impact on our customers.

"This year is the first year we have revised prices for over two years. Regulatory pressures and interconnection costs also have an influence."
