West London to take part in mobile TV pilot
Orange and T-Mobile have unveiled plans of a multi-channel mobile TV service which will be operational in west London late in 2008.
The pilot will involve customers using handsets with a technology called TDtv to receive ten digital radio stations and up to 24 high-resolution TV channels.
Appetisingly, many of the most popular channels in the UK are expected to be included in the service.
Paul Jevons, Orange's product and innovation director, said: "Orange was the first UK network operator to introduce a mobile TV service in May 2005, and is continually looking for unique insights and innovative content to ensure that Orange Mobile TV continues to grow.
Bristol was the scene of a successful trial in 2006 and other networks will be eyeing the pilot with great interest to see whether mobile TV can prove both practical and popular.
The trial will make use of a part of the licensed 3G spectrum which is unused at the moment.
